This is the moment a kindhearted resident gives water to a thirsty armadillo during a period of drought.

The incident was filmed by Good Samaritan Sonia Magrini in the municipality of Sao Miguel do Oeste in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina on 23rd November.

Magrini told Newsflash: “The encounter with the little animal took place at around 7pm. I often walk in the area and on that day it was very hot as we’ve been experiencing a very bad drought.

“When I saw the little animal I soon realised it was thirsty. I started to film and I went up to it, thinking it wouldn’t come close to me. But when I poured the water, it got closer to me.

“Poor little thing. Animals are suffering from the drought, too.”

Magrini, who works as a teacher, had half a bottle of water on her which she gave to the parched armadillo.

The small animal eagerly drank it before returning to the nearby overgrowth.

Sao Miguel do Oeste has been in a state of emergency for two months due to the drought, which has cost the agricultural sector over BRL 23.5 million (GBP 3.3 million).

It is one of around 80 municipalities in the southern state that has declared a state of emergency.

The current drought is the worst Santa Catarina has experienced in recorded history.

However, there are signs the dire situation is improving slightly, with scattered showers and light rain over the past week and heavy showers forecast for later this week.
