This is the moment an expensive Tesla car suddenly swerves off a bridge and smashes through a guard rail into a river, claiming the lives of the couple inside.
The incident took place on Xincheng Bridge in the city of Liyang, which is located in eastern China’s coastal province of Jiangsu, on Christmas Eve (24th December).
The footage shows the Tesla, model currently unknown, beginning to cross a bridge when it suddenly swerves and breaks through the barrier before plunging into the river below.
Other images show rescuers frantically striving to smash the car’s windows in a bid to rescue the two people in the vehicle, which can be seen lying on its side in shallow water in the river.
Two people, a man and a woman, were removed from the car, as can be seen in the third piece of footage.
The man was declared dead after being removed from the vehicle, and the woman, who was in a serious condition, was taken to hospital, where she was admitted to the ICU.
The two were reportedly husband and wife and had just opened a new restaurant. The wife has been named in local media reports solely as Ms Jiang. The husband’s name was not reported.
The woman succumbed to her injuries early in the morning of 25th December. Neither victim has been named in local media reports.
The Tesla reportedly had foreign licence plates, although it is currently unclear which country the vehicle was from.
The investigation is ongoing.
