A toddler is in critical condition after climbing onto a sofa and falling from the window of a 10th-floor flat before landing on the windscreen of a parked car.

Nineteen-month-old Leen Farghali crawled onto the sofa before tumbling through the open window of the flat in the city of Ras Al Khaimah in the northern United Arab Emirates.

Her devastated parents say they had only just bought the settee and had not realised their little girl was even capable of climbing onto it.

Doctors say they do not know how Leen survived the 30-metre (98-feet) fall but the car, which happened to be parked directly below, had probably saved her life.

The tot, whose family is from Egypt, suffered severe multiple injuries and is currently under sedation in the intensive care unit of the Saqr Hospital in the city.

Her dad Mahmoud Farghali, aged 32, said his daughter climbed onto the sofa to reach the window while her mother was busy getting a schoolbag ready for their older son Abdullah, aged six.

He added: “Everybody is supporting us during this critical time but seeing her lying there unconscious, not laughing or playing, gives pain to the heart.”

A Saqr Hospital spokesman said doctors were awaiting the results of new scans but added that Leen’s condition remained critical.
