The Mexican police have arrested the suspected leader of the Cartel del Noreste drug cartel who reportedly took orders from the man allegedly behind the attack on the United States consulate in 2008.
Gunmen had shot at the United States consulate in Monterrey, Nuevo León, in 2008 and threw a grenade at the building although it failed to explode.
The General Attorney’s Office of the state of Nuevo Leon in northeastern Mexico have confirmed that they have arrested a 38-year-old man called Rodolfo Garza Briseno, alias ‘El Mostro’.
Garza Briseno is believed to be the leader of the Cartel del Noreste (CDN) which operates in the Nuevo Leon state and the right-hand man of the highest leader of the ‘Los Zetas’ cartel, Juan Gerardo Trevino Chavez, alias ‘El Huevo’.
Garza Briseno was reportedly arrested together with five accomplices named as Nancy Ivete, 30, Armando Ivan, 35, Francisco Esteban, 31 and two other accomplices whose were nor reported.
According to local media, ‘El Mostro’ also received direct orders from Hector Raul Luna, alias ‘El Tory’, the alleged leader of Los Zetas in the city of Monterrey.
Reports claim Hector Raul Luna was the mastermind behind the attack on the United State consulate in 2008.a
Luna is believed to be hiding in the municipality of Nuevo Laredo in the state of Tamaulipas and he trusted ‘El Mostro’ to execute his orders, according to local media.
The six people were reportedly arrested during a police operation in the municipalities of San Nicolas and Apodaca also in the state of Nuevo Leon.
Police reportedly seized 62 plastic bags with a crystallised substance that is believed to be a drug along with a firearm, some ammunition, and money.
It is unclear if the suspects have been charged.
