This is the moment a bungling Mercedes-Benz driver slams into the back of a stopped car on a motorway bridge while recording a video to show his girlfriend he was coming home.

Video from the city of Taizhou in East China’s Zhejiang Province shows the man filming the road ahead for his partner during the call before a traffic camera captures him rear-ending a Toyota saloon.

Authorities say Mercedes-Benz owner Wang, who was identified by his surname, had been travelling on the Taizhou Bay Bridge when he decided to pull his phone out to record the message.

He wanted to let his girlfriend know he was on his way home, but his video shows him failing to notice the as he approaches the Toyota stopped on the road ahead.

The Toyota, which had broken down due to engine failure, is rear-ended by Wang’s Mercedes-Benz and sent spinning into a neighbouring lane.

Wang destroyed the front bumper on his Mercedes-Benz as well as part of his engine, but he luckily caused no serious injuries to the Toyota occupants who were both in the front of the car, the police said.

The authorities said both Wang and the Toyota owner, Luo, would be found liable in the accident, as the former took his eyes off the road and the latter failed to notify approaching traffic by setting up a warning triangle.

Investigations are ongoing.
