Man In China Buys New Car With 170 Bags Of 10p Coins He Saved Up

These images show how a man in China bought a new car with 170 bags full to the brim of coins each worth RMB 1 (GBP 0.12) that he had saved up.

The incident, which saw the man show up at the car dealership with some 130,000 coins, took place in the city of Linyi, which is located in Shandong province in eastern China, on 29th December.

The man, who reportedly works in the woven bag business, showed up at the FAW Trading Company, which is a state-owned car company, with the 170 bags full of coins.

A first piece of footage shows them being piled up against a wall, before a second clip shows a clerk counting them after they were taken to a bank on 30th December. It is currently unclear if the man, who has not been named, took them to the bank or if it was employees of the car company.

The customer reportedly said that there were 130,000 coins in total, but this is still being verified by the bank.

Local media report that it would have been illegal for the dealership to refuse the currency in that form, but rather than count it themselves, they simply forwarded the money on to the bank for them to deal with.

At the time of writing, the bank had not finished counting all of the coins, which is necessary before the purchase can go through and the man can drive away in his new car, according to local media reports.
