This is the moment a Chinese diner finds a cockroach at the bottom of his son’s meal before the restaurant owner snatches the bowl away and dares him to call the police.

The incident was filmed at an unnamed restaurant in the city of Xuzhou in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu, and the footage was widely shared on the social network Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) last week.

According to the news site Baidu, the man, name not disclosed, took his young son to a local restaurant for a meal and later spotted the cockroach at the bottom of the boy’s bowl.

He then confronted staff members with the bowl and the bug, and the restaurant owner reportedly snatched it away from him, warning him not to look for trouble and daring him to call the police if he believed there was a cockroach in his food.

Following the incident, the man reportedly contacted the health department and food standards agency to report the restaurant.

According to Baidu, a resulting negotiation between both parties resulted in the restaurant compensating the man for the meal for CNY 165 (GBP 19).

On 4th November, the local authorities said that neither party had come forward with evidence against the other and no investigation will be carried out for the time being.
