A husband is facing 15 years behind bars for stabbing his wife to death and then calmly calling police to turn himself in.
Suspect Catalin Romulus Barany, 33 – a Romanian national – was arrested after police officers found his 36-year-old wife Mihaela’s body in the family apartment at 6.30pm on 4th September, 2022.
The incident reportedly took place in their home on Rosenstrasse in Furth, northern Bavaria, Germany.
The couple, who had two children aged four and seven, were reportedly involved in a furious row when Barany snapped.
He was arrested without resistance after calling the police himself, and has been in custody ever since.
The investigating judge charged him with manslaughter on Monday, 5th September 2022.
He faces 15 years in prison if found guilty.
A neighbour said: “We heard the screams. But we didn’t think anything of it. The two were constantly arguing loudly, the police have been there more than once.
“After the accident, I met her brother on the street, he cried and said that his sister was dead. But he said the kids are fine.”
Senior public prosecutor Antje Gabriels-Gorsolke, aged 59, said: “Several items were confiscated in the apartment. Whether the murder weapon is present is still the subject of the investigation.”
Gabriels-Gorsolke restrained from disclosing whether the children witnessed the incident and added: “I won’t say anything about that.”
Barany’s defense attorney Dr Christian Fuchs said: “My client did not give the investigating judge any information.”
The investigation is ongoing.
