Iraqi Soldier Arrested For Doing Doughnuts With Tank In The Middle Of Baghdad

An Iraqi soldier has been arrested after this footage emerged on social media showing him doing doughnuts in a tank in the middle of the streets of the capital Baghdad.

The footage shows the tank going around in circles on a street in Baghdad on the evening of Sunday 7th November, according to the Emirati newspaper Al-Bayan, which cited the Iraqi Military Operations Command as saying in a statement that the driver has since been punished.

In the footage, the soldier can be seen sticking out of the tank’s turret while the tank performs its ‘doughnut’ manoeuvre. As the footage ends, another soldier enters the frame.

The incident occurred amid growing tensions after a failed assassination attempt against the country’s Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi at his place of residence on Sunday, leading to military personnel being deployed to patrol the capital’s streets, according to AP.

The statement reportedly issued by the Iraqi Military Operations Command and quoted by the newspaper said: “Lieutenant-General Ahmed Salim, the commander of Baghdad operations, directed the formation of an investigation council against the driver of the armoured vehicle, who violated the directives and military control during the duty of security deployment in the streets and intersections of the capital.”

The statement also said: “The members of the Iraqi army have the highest levels of military control and are fully committed to good manners and appearance during their implementation of duties, which indicates the nobility of this army.

“The presence of one member in violation [of the rules] does not represent the rest of the committed military personnel.”

There had been no further updates at the time of writing regarding the identity of the soldier or soldiers at fault and what their punishment has been. It is also currently unclear where exactly in Baghdad the footage was filmed.
