These photos show the facial wounds – and apparent exhaustion – suffered by hardworking Chinese medical teams in the coronavirus-hit city of Wuhan.

The images were widely shared on social networks and local media said that medical staff members based in Wuhan in the eastern Chinese province of Hubei are currently on their feet nonstop.

Many workers are said to be so exhausted that they often finish the day sleeping on hospital chairs and floors before starting another shift.

Medical teams are so busy, they do not have much time to eat a meal or go to the toilet, according to local media.

Meanwhile, they also have to wear heavy protective gear with face masks or goggles tightly secured to help prevent infection.

As well as the mental and emotional stress of dealing with growing numbers of coronavirus patients, the thick suits and tight masks have left many hospital workers with blisters, sores and scabs on their face and bodies, according to reports.

In the photos, young male and female workers, some of them evidently exhausted, are seen with deep dents in their skin where the tightly fastened masks have caused sores and other minor injuries.

On Tuesday morning, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in China totalled over 20,000, including a one-month-old tot in the south-western province of Guizhou.
