Homeless Woman Gives Birth On Pavement Outside Maternity Hospital

This is the moment a homeless woman looks down at her newborn baby crying in a pool of blood on the pavement after she gave birth outside a hospital after workers allegedly refused to admit her.

The incident took place outside the Barbara Heliodora Maternity Hospital in the city of Rio Branco in the northern Brazilian state of Acre on 25th January.

According to the news site G1, the homeless woman went to the hospital when she went into labour, but reception workers refused to admit her.

As a result, the mother gave birth on the pavement outside the hospital, apparently without any assistance.

In the footage, she is seen looking down at her newborn, who is crying on the blood-covered pavement, after apparently cutting the umbilical cord herself.

A passerby witnessed the scene and said he went into the hospital to ask for help, but reception staff allegedly refused again.

The man, who preferred not to be identified, said: “The woman gave birth outside the entrance to the maternity hospital. I went there, called the guys at the reception, and nobody wanted to help. I believe she is homeless, I have never seen her with anyone.”

He added: “She has to be attended to, she is a human being!”

Hospital general manager Laura Pontes said the mum and newborn were eventually admitted into care and are currently doing well, adding that the baby is being monitored by paediatricians.

Pontes added: “Regarding the mother, we are requesting a psychiatric follow up. She has disorganised speech and does not accept that she was pregnant and does not want to see the baby.

“So, we have to be careful and first ask for a psychiatrist.

“She doesn’t know where she lives, she says she has no family. We are having difficulty finding relatives so we can continue.

“We have already contacted the Child Services and the Public Prosecutor’s Office to provide the necessary care for the mother and her baby.

“We are also investigating how this birth took place outside the maternity hospital…

“I am investigating who precisely took care of the call here in the unit…if there was a refusal, we will take all the necessary measures.”

Pontes also said that the baby needs clothes and other essential items and called on members of the public to make donations at the hospital.
