A young child has reportedly discovered a four-centimetre needle in her supermarket pork chop as she sat down to tuck into her dinner with her dad.

The incident took place in the western Bulgarian capital Sofia and the images were shared on Facebook by the girl’s father, photographer Vasil Kirkelanov.

He posted the photos with the caption: “This time, I am not joking around. This meat was on my daughter’s plate! I could hurt the person responsible for this. Can you help me find out who is responsible? My daughter is okay, she found the needle in the meat before eating it.”

According to local media, Kirkelanov did not notice the needle when he was preparing the meat and his daughter told him that it tasted strange when she took her first bite.

The pair then reportedly noticed the four-centimetre needle protruding from the sliced pork.

The father reported the incident to the authorities and an investigation concluded that no foul play took place the abattoir, but the Bulgarian Agency for Food Safety reportedly fined the supermarket in Sofia for selling the contaminated meat.

In response, Kirkelanov stated: “I was hoping for so much from the Bulgarian Agency for Food Safety’s investigation. Besides photography, I also produce documentaries and I conducted my own investigation into the matter.

“I found there are serious problems regarding regulations that are in place and that is why we find ourselves in the position of no one being at fault.”

He said he managed to track the lorry which transported the pig with another 110 carcasses, but claimed they were all numbered the same and was not able to continue with the probe.

The concerned dad is calling on the authorities to tighten the country’s food safety regulations.
