A German TV host is urging his countrymen to buy French in order to annoy Turkish President Recep Erdogan who said Muslims should boycott the country’s produce.

The French president Emmanuel Macron has been fiercely criticised by Muslims over his comments apparently linking the religion with terrorism.

And in Turkey, Erdogan said people should stop buying French products to protest against the French president’s alleged anti-Islamic stance and refusal to ban cartoons insulting the Prophet.

He had even suggested that Macron do a mental health checkup.

German presenter Oliver Welke, who does a late-night satirical programme, has now taken up the gauntlet in his country by saying people should empty the shelves by buying French produce in order to provoke the Turkish president.

He said: “Let’s buy as many products in France as you can in the days in the weeks to come. It’s not only delicious, but it’s going to annoy Erdogan.”

Germany has 1.5 million Turks living in the country which meant that even the German Chancellor Angela Merkel was cautious in taking on Erdogan which is simply called “defamatory” and did not go any further.
