A giant Christmas candle officially listed as the biggest in the world has been compared to a huge condom after fireman put the decorative sheath on back to front.
The viral pictures show the 36m high church tower in the small town of Schlitz in the district of Vogelsbergkreis in the German state of Hesse with a huge red covering that online commentators said makes it look like a giant condom in a safe-sex campaign.
However, in an interview with Newsflash, fire chief Michael Blaser said all the fuss has been a surprise given that they have been covering the tower with what he admitted looked like a giant condom for almost 30 years now.
Every year, the authorities wrap the steeple in red material with a wick on top to make it appear like a giant candle rather a sheathed p*nis.
He said the reason the unfortunate comparison was made this year for the first time was because the fire service had difficulty putting the covering on.
He told newsflash: “Because of COVID-19 restrictions, we were not able to use the normal team and plan this as usual, and many of the people that helped before were not available.
“It meant when the covering, which I suppose does seem rather like a giant condom, was rolled down the side of the steeple, it got stuck because they had the thing on inside-out.
“It was then left like that for a week until we could get the team together to do it properly. That’s the only reason we can assume that there was this extra focus on it this year, because no one has ever suggested that it looked like a giant condom before.”
He said that the tower decoration was something they were very proud of as it was actually listed in Guinness World Records as the world’s largest candle. It was set up 30 years ago as an initiative by local workers to promote the Christmas market.
He admitted that during the day the giant condom comparison was not unfair as there were similarities, but he stressed that at night, once the wick was visible, it was clear that it was meant to be something else.
