Groundhog Fire Cadet Correctly Predicts Spring Despite Winter Freeze Elsewhere In The US

This is the light-hearted moment a fire service cadet stages his own version of Groundhog Day.

The short clip was posted online by the Camano Island Fire & Rescuewhich said: “Legend holds that every February 2 on Camano Island, the fire department’s cadets emerge from hibernation.

“If the cadet sees its shadow, it retreats back into its burrow (AKA the training prop) and the island is in for six more weeks of winter.

“If the cadet doesn’t see its shadow, spring is likely to arrive early. Unlike the end of school, which will arrive sometime in June.”

And it seems as if there might be some value to the legend as this year despite heavy snows and freezing conditions that have hit much of the US, we are reliably informed that locally in Camano Island at least, Spring did indeed arrive as the Groundhog fire cadet predicted.

In a note to our editorial team, Camano Fore pointied out: “The weather here on Camano has been very spring-like since our cadet made his prediction. He was right – at least locally.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that the winter freeze had also hit the region, however, as Camano Fire pointed out, locally they were spared the big freeze. We are happy to make this clear and have updated the story accordingly.

FWIW, the weather here on Camano has been very spring-like since our cadet made his prediction. He was right – at least locally.
