This image shows a heroic female flight attendant carrying a sick passenger on her back to a waiting ambulance because a stretcher would not fit down the cabin aisle.

The incident took place on a China United Airlines flight just before takeoff in the city of Chengdu in the central Chinese province of Sichuan while 175 people were on board.

According to reports, the unnamed ill passenger pressed the call button and asked cabin crew member Zhang Qiqi if they could suspend the flight as she was suffering with severe abdominal pains.

Zhang realised that the woman’s condition was serious and asked if there was a doctor on board.

The female flight attendant told local media: “At that time, we made an emergency broadcast asking if a doctor was on board.

“A doctor came over to check on the patient and told us that her pulse was dangerously weak and that she needed treatment.”

Zhang said that she calmed the passenger down as medics rushed to the plane, however a stretcher would not fit down the aisle and the cabin crew member asked the woman if she would allow her to carry her on her back.

After consenting, Zhang carried her to the waiting ambulance.

She said: “I was only focused on trying to save her. When I looked back at the footage, I was so surprised. How did I have so much energy? I think it must have been in the spur of the moment.”

According to reports, the flight was delayed by 43 minutes.

There have been no further updates on the woman’s condition.
