A woman who bought a delicious-looking strawberry cake found it was not quite so sweet when she discovered the fruit had been printed on the wrapper.
The woman – from Xining, Qinghai Province, north-western China – was astonished when she unwrapped the treat and found her fruit disappearing with it.
She got her revenge when she shared a video of her unveiling the cake on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.
In the video – which received over 200,000 reactions – the woman, not named in local media, can be seen slowly unwrapping the disappointing dessert.
As she peels away the cake’s plastic wrap, which purportedly shows dozens of large strawberries sitting around the icing, she is faced with a not-so-sweet realisation.
Although the fruit on top of the cake is genuine, the delicious-looking berries around the side were nothing more than stickers.
The woman told local media that she had ordered the dessert from a local store wanting to eat a strawberry cake to celebrate the arrival of 2023.
She said (in Chinese): “I wanted to eat the first strawberry cake in the new year, but I didn’t expect the strawberries to be printed on plastic paper.”
She added that she did not contact the seller, but does hope they will see the video and that they will not let the same thing happen again.
Netizens described the situation as a fraud, and user ‘Haibara Ai u’ said: “The cream is all stuck on it, and you can tell it’s vegetable cream at a glance.”
