Victim Aleyna Nur Gokce was walking home along the pavement in Esenyurt, Istanbul Province, on 8th November when the driver lost control of his vehicle and swerved into her.

Aleyna died in the intensive care unit of the Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine hospital 18 days later, on 26th November.

Her body was taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy.

Following the crash, the man behind the wheel – named in local media as Sezer H. – was arrested and then released on bail.

He was arrested a second time and then remanded in custody after the Public Prosecutor’s Office appealed the decision to free him.

Police found it was not the first time he had apparently caused death by dangerous driving.

They discovered he had fatally run down 66-year-old Sati Yilmaz with his car 14 years ago.

In that incident – in Avcilar, Istanbul Province, in March 2008 – Sezer H., then aged 24, reversed into Sati with his pickup truck as she was crossing the road, trapping her under a wheel.

He was originally given 20 months in prison for causing death by negligence, but his sentence was later downgraded to a fine of TRY 12,100 (GBP 539) because of his ‘good behaviour’.

Aleyna had dreamed of working as an air stewardess. Her funeral was held in Esenyurt on 27th November.

She leaves behind her parents and an older brother. Bereaved father Recep Gokce said: “Other Aleynas should not get hurt, they should give him a huge punishment.

“Even if they give him a life sentence, my heart will not be relieved, my daughter will not come back.”

He added: “This is murder, not an accident. He killed a woman 13 (sic) years ago and went to jail for 40 days. Is human life that cheap?”

And grieving brother Hakan Gokce said: “They stole our dreams. When we look at the past, if he had been sentenced 14 years ago, this would not have happened.”
