This is the moment a cute fluffy-headed bird takes an interest in a roadside CCTV camera and returns to a different camera on the same motorway over 20 minutes later.
The endearing scenes were captured by CCTV cameras on the BR-163 highway in the municipalities of Bandeirantes and Coxim respectively in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul on 4th November, and they were published on social media on 9th November.
The incidents caught the attention of CCTV monitors, who said it was the same bird appearing twice. It was first seen chirping at the first camera at 2.08pm before reappearing 22 minutes later at 2.30pm in front of another curious contraption down the road.
In the footage, the first camera films several heavy goods vehicles chugging along the highway before a bird’s face suddenly appears in front of the lens.
The bird, with a fluffy grey head and red markings around its eyes, happily chirps at the camera before the video cuts to it appearing before the second camera 22 minutes later.
It is unclear what type of bird it was, though local media have suggested it may have been a wedge-tailed grass finch (Emberizoides herbicola).
It is not uncommon to see wild birds taking an interest in CCTV cameras set up along Brazil’s highways. On 7th October, a masked tityra (Tityra semifasciata) was filmed gazing into a camera in the same area.
The company Concessionaria CCR MSVia operates 477 CCTV cameras along the BR-163 highway, covering a total distance of 845.4 kilometres (525.3 miles) 24 hours a day.
