Police are searching for the parents of this adorable infant boy who his rescuers said was left for dead by the roadside before being found by passers-by.

The boy, who doctors say does not appear to have any obvious birth defects, has been placed under the care of Linchen Hospital in the city of Huazhou, which is in South China’s Guangdong Province.

According to medics, the boy weighs roughly 4.5 kilogrammes (9.9 lbs) and is thought to be between the age of five or six months.

Local residents who found the child said he was wrapped in a quilt and left by the side of the road to fend for himself without any food, water or adequate warm clothes.

The defenceless child reportedly left for dead was heard crying, and did not stop wailing for his mum until officers from Linchen Police Station picked him up and took him to the hospital.

Doctors and nurses from the obstetrics department are filmed taking care of the infant boy who does not stop crying at the hospital.

Both the hospital and local police have asked members of the public for help in identifying the child and tracking down his parents.

The reasons behind why the child might have been abandoned were not immediately clear at the time of writing.

However, his mother could face criminal charges if found guilty of child abandonment.
