Cops who chased a BMW for nearly 50 miles at speeds of over 125mph were surprised to find five kids aged 12 to 14 in the vehicle.

According to reports, the five youngsters are suspected of robbing an electrical store in the city of Cologne in western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia before fleeing in a BMW.

The local police said that that there may have been a sixth member in the car.

A police spokesman said: “After chasing cops managed to stop the car, one of the passengers escaped and has not yet been tracked down.

“It is unclear if that person was the driver, we are continuing to investigate the incident.”

According to reports, the police chased the BMW for nearly 70 kilometres (44 miles) on the motorway at speeds of up to 200kph (124mph) to the city of Essen where the five kids aged 12 to 14 were eventually stopped.

The police spokesperson said that the minors are from the city of Duisburg and “all five have been involved with the police before”.

Meanwhile, the BMW they were travelling in reportedly belongs to a Romanian owner.

The police spokesperson said: “The licence plates on the car had been stolen from another BMW shortly before the incident.”

The authorities are still trying to determine how the youngsters came in possession of the vehicle.

Reports said the young suspects allegedly stole thousands of Euros worth of goods from an electrical store in Cologne which were found inside the BMW.

After the minors were interrogated, they were returned to their parents as the investigation continues.

In Germany, the minimum age of criminal responsibility depends on the age and mental development of the young suspect and not on the offence. People aged 14 to 18 is considered to be a youth and any person aged 18 to 21 is considered a young adult.
