Belgian Woman Killed As Two Boats Crash Off Ibiza

A 43-year-old Belgian woman has died when two sailing boats crashed into each other off the British tourist hotspot of Ibiza in the Balearic Islands.

The incident took place near the islet of Castavi between the islands of Ibiza and Formentera in the Spanish Balearic Islands at around 1pm on 26th July.

Two sailboats called Shambala and Batucada collided and the emergency services were informed that the middle-aged woman died on the spot while several others sustained minor injuries.

The Maritime Safety and Rescue Society in Palma, the capital of Majorca, sent two rescue vessels to the accident scene where the dead Belgian woman’s body was removed.

Meanwhile, passengers were taken to the port of Savina de Formentera where a team of paramedics was waiting to attend those with injuries, according to local newspaper Diario de Mallorca.

One passenger had to be admitted to the Hospital de Formentera.

The 56-year-old man, also from Belgium, suffered non-critical injuries and was hospitalised in a state of shock.

According to Spanish Civil Guard, the crash took place when two sailing boats carrying out manoeuvres at the same time and the victim was knocked into the water.

Local newspaper Diario de Mallorca said the injured passengers were all on the same vessel although it is unclear which boat the victim was on at the time.

The investigation is ongoing.
