This adorable baby elephant has just been born in Zurich zoo in Switzerland after it’s Mum carried it for almost two years.

The birth went smoothly for the baby’s mother, the 35-year-old elephant Indi, with the baby elephant arriving in the early hours of the morning at the zoo’s Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park.

A zoo spokesman said the elephant calf weighs in at 150 kilogrammes and is already walking around, with mother and baby doing well. Also in the enclosure during the birth was Indi’s other daughters, Chandra and Omysha.

The father of the baby is the 15-year-old bull Thai, and the baby elephant which does not yet have a name is the third birth since the elephant park was opened in 2014.

And the zoo said that this year was a lucky year as they were still expecting another two elephant births in 2020.

Elephants have the longest gestation period of all mammals, carrying the pregnancy for nearly 2 years, and in the case of the Indi the pregnancy lasted 627 days.
