A Swedish-Iranian doctor has been sentenced to death in Iran, accused of passing information about two nuclear scientists to the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad.
Ahmad Reza Jalali will be executed by the Iranian authorities on 21st May, according to the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA).
The doctor – a climate change expert and who lectured at the Karolinska Institute in the Swedish capital Stockholm – was arrested in 2016 while visiting Iran on an academic visa.
He was sentenced to death in 2017 after being convicted of passing information about two Iranian nuclear scientists to Israel, which led to their assassination.
Jalali obtained Swedish citizenship while in detention in February 2018, months after Iran’s Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence.
Meanwhile, former Iranian prosecutor Hamid Noury, who was arrested by the Swedish authorities in 2019, is facing a life sentence in Sweden for international war crimes and human rights violations.
Noury, 61, is accused of playing a lead role in the execution of over 5,000 prisoners at Gohardasht Prison in Karaj in 1988 on the order of the then Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini.
He was arrested at Stockholm Arlanda Airport in November 2019 after Iranian dissidents in Sweden filed complaints against him.
Last week, the Iranian Foreign Ministry reportedly summoned the Swedish envoy to contest “the baseless and fabricated accusations that the Swedish prosecutor made against Iran” during Noury’s court case.
