Witnesses identified the woman as the owner of athletics goods retailer Anta, which is inside the glass- and metal-clad skyscraper.

The lengthy metal object is believed to have come off the side of the building, and it reportedly caused the woman fatal head injuries.

Videos taken by witnesses showed paramedics tending to the victim at the scene as she lies motionless on the public square outside the shopping complex.

But she was declared dead after attempts to revive her were unsuccessful, reports said.

Maoye World has yet to put out a statement regarding the accident at the time of writing.

Taiyuan police are reportedly investigating the case, but it was not clear whether there were any suspects or if any arrests were made.
