This 21-year-old woman has been arrested after abandoning her newborn baby girl under a bush where she died.
The child was reportedly born alive although an autopsy is still being carried out to determine the cause of death.
The baby was found dead in the bushes next to a stream in the municipality of Valle de Angeles in the department Francisco Morazan in western Honduras earlier this week.
Reports said the body was found by a local you noticed straight away that the child was not moving and appeared to be dead.
They said the baby girl still had her umbilical cord attached.
The police arrested Merary Abigail Cruz Escobar, 21, on charges of abandoning the body which technically come under the country’s tough anti-abortion laws.
Reports claim that neighbours told local police that they know several pregnant women in the municipality but they did not know who the mother could be.
The police reportedly inspected the place where the body was found and launched an investigation that led to the woman’s arrest.
Honduras is known for its conservative laws against abortion which includes infanticide in the strict central American country.
Under the current law, the Honduras government can punish women with prison sentences of between three and 10 years for having an abortion depending on whether it was voluntary or they were forced into it.
