A young hiker has sadly died during a mountain trek when she lost herbalance and plummeted 150 metres (492 feet) onto the rocks below.

Giulia Tita, 29, had been ascending the Peak of the Souls in The Passeier Valley, in the mountains of South Tyrol, in northern Italy on 15th August when tragedy struck.

According to the national newspaper today.it, Giulia was with her sentimental partner Michele Cimadom and two other friends at the time.

The group had reportedly been walking the path that leads from the refuge to the peak along the border between Italy and Austria which reaches an altitude of 3,475 metres (11,401 feet),

The fatal accident happened around 1.30 pm at an altitude of 3,200 meters (10,499 feet) when Giulia suddenly lost her balance and fell off a cliff edge, falling almost 500 feet to the rocks below.

There is no further information as to whether she had been walking on a marked path when she fell.

The Pelikan 1 helicopter of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano went to the scene with a medical team and Alpine Rescue technicians on board, but the young hiker died on impact.

Giulia worked at the Central Bank of Trento after graduating in finance according to local newspaper Rain News.

According to Rain News, her colleagues described her as. “A sunny girl and very committed to everything she did.”

The accident comes just days after a 33-year-old base jumper also lost his life in the South Tyrolean mountains.
