A young groom has crashed and completely destroyed a 70,000-EUR Maserati the night before he was due to get married after he rented the pricey vehicle for the big day and allegedly drove it drunk.

The vehicle subsequently caught fire and has since been declared a write off.

The incident took place in Thionville, a commune in the north-eastern French department of Moselle, when the 25-year-old man was driving the vehicle with three other people on board before he crashed it into a small wall.

According to French newspaper Le Republicain Lorrain, the man had rented the expensive luxury car for his wedding day, but he then allegedly got drunk and crashed it last Friday at around 3:30pm in the afternoon.

The young man, from Florange, a suburb on the outskirts of Thionville, was driving three of his family members when he crashed the 70,000-EUR (59,000-GBP) Maserati SUV on Rue de Longway, heading in the direction of Val-Marie.

The expensive car caught fire and has since been removed after being declared a write off, with the young driver, unnamed in reports, fined 135 EUR (113 GBP) by the police for drink-driving. This however appears to be the least of his worries, as his deposit is also said to have gone up in smoke.

He had reportedly put down a deposit totalling “thousands of euros” for the luxury rental but luckily no one was injured. The wrecked Maserati was removed from the scene on Monday.

Local media speculated that the young couple may have to reassess their honeymoon budget.
