A Yemeni feminist group has claimed that a local father has sold his young daughter for GBP 300.

The group Yemeni Feminist Voice shared a photo of an official document that appears to have been signed by several people including government representatives.

The contract, which did not detail the reason for the sale, officially certifies the sale of the girl called Lemon, age not disclosed, for USD 400 (GBP 296).

According to local media, the document was rubber stamped in August 2019 by the documentation department at the Yemeni Ministry of Justice.

Yemeni Feminist Voice said that the father, identified as Yasser Abdul Naser Saeed Al Salahi, agreed to sell his daughter to a man called Mohammad Hassan Ali Al Fatki with half the value paid up front.

Human rights groups said the official document shows that “human trafficking still exists in Yemen with no change to this ugly reality”.

Netizens shared photos of the family and contract on social media, slamming the alleged deal as modern-day slavery especially as the ‘deal’ appears to involve government officials.

Activists are also calling on international organisations to save the young girl from the reported contract, adding that they are concerned about her wellbeing after the deal was signed 16 months ago.
