Two Chinese officials have been sacked after 1,000 portions of pork meant for human consumption were delivered to a Wuhan district in the back of a dustcart and then tipped onto the street when being unloaded.

The incident took place in the district of Qingshan in the city of Wuhan located in the eastern Chinese province of Hubei and two officials have reportedly been dismissed while a third is under investigation.

The pork, packed in plastic bags, was delivered to the area from government stores on 11th March.

After the 1,000 portions of meat were delivered in the back of a dustcart and then unceremoniously dumped on a plastic cover on the street, local residents complained on the Chinese social network Weibo.

Deputy head of Qingshan district, Luo Rong, who was responsible for logistics during the epidemic, is under investigation by the city’s disciple commission over the incident, according to local media.

Meanwhile, reports said that two unnamed senior figures have already been fired.

A district government spokesperson confirmed that all 1,000 portions of the pork will be destroyed and replaced with fresh stocks.

The statement added: “We failed to meet hygienic requirements of food transport and exerted a bad influence on residents’ physical and psychological health. We extend our sincere apologies to our citizens.”

According to local media, food supplies have largely been managed by the Chinese government since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan.

Although residents remain under quarantine, new cases of the virus have dropped significantly from the high of 4,000 a day in mid-February. On 11th March, only eight new cases were reported, according to local media.
