The incident took place at around 3am on 1st October in the district of Marcapata in the province of Quispicanchi in the southern Peruvian region of Cusco.

According to local media, the bus came off the road and fell 100 metres (328 feet) into a canyon.

The bus was travelling from the city of Puerto Maldonado in the region of Madre de Dios to the city of Cusco.

The reason for the accident is still unclear and investigators are trying to establish whether it occurred due to the bad weather conditions and thick fog in the area at the time, or whether the driver was somehow culpable.

Meanwhile, the local authorities are trying to identify the dead victims.

The investigation continues.
