World Cup champion Lucas Hernandez has opened up about his ex-professional footballer star father saying “I do not know if he is alive or not”.

Bayern Munich’s club-record signing Hernandez made the comments in an interview with DAZN where he spoke about his family life and shed light on growing up without a father while praising his mother.

Hernandez said: “She lived and worked to give us everything. We did not need anything. Now Theo and I are professional footballers so she can sit down, relax and enjoy her life a little bit.”

Hernandez is referring to his brother Theo with whom he says forms “a united trio” along with their mother.

Hernandez said: “Theo and I always had football, morning, day and night. We played together all the time. My brother is my best friend, we are very close.”

When asked if he knew the story behind his father’s absence the Bayern star said: “They (his mother and father) separated. One day my father suddenly left and we never heard from him again.”

He said that though “I have never tried to contact him” as a child “I wondered where he was and would have liked to know more about him but as time went on, he was in my thoughts less”.

Their father is Jean-Francois Hernandez a central defender who played for Toulouse, FC Sochaux-Montbeliard Olympique Marseille in France and SD Compostela, Rayo Vallecano[ and Atletico Madrid in Spain. He retired in 2002 at the age of 33.

He went on to say: “I have been thinking about myself and my life when I was growing up. It is now clear to me that he left because he did not love us. If he did not love us, it is better that he left.

“I am 23 years old right now and I was five or six when he left. It has been 16 or 17 years since I heard anything from him.”

Hernandez assures: “I do not know where he is, what he does or if he is alive or not.”

Hernandez finished the interview by saying: “I myself have founded my own little family. Since he has not got in touch with us at this point, I suppose it is because he is not interested or simply does not want to join us.”

Hernandez recently had a baby boy with his WAG Amelia Lorente in August of last year, just two weeks after being crowned World Cup Champion with France. He told media it “made me more conscious of how he failed his role as a father”.

Hernandez was transferred to Bayern Munich from Atletico Madrid this summer for 68 million GBP which is Bayern’s most expensive transfer in history.

Hernandez did not play in Bayern’s 7-2 trouncing of Tottenham Hotspur last night.
