The incident happened in the district of Anping in Taiwan’s south-western city of Tainan, with the worker, surnamed Pan, said to be howling in pain following the accident.

Pan, who suffered a compound fracture, had been standing on the ground floor of the construction site when the scaffolding fell from the 18th floor.

He was struck by the metal structure which crushed his left ankle, leaving him with broken bones and a bloody open wound.

Members of the Tainan City Fire Department were called to the scene and managed to remove the heavy scaffold by sawing it apart and lifting it off the workman.

Fireman Huang Ting-yuan said: “He scaffold fell on his left leg and crushed his ankle. Because of its size, we had to break it apart before removing it.”

Pan was rushed to National Cheng Kung University Hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.

Work at the under-construction high-rise building has since been halted as authorities investigate the cause of the accident.
