Two young women have been arrested on suspicion of killing and dismembering this 21-year-old man in order to steal his money before scattering his body parts far and wide.

Victim Diogo Goncalves’ head was found near a waterfall outside the town of Tavira in the southern Portuguese region of the Algarve while his limbless body was found thrown from a cliff in the town of Sagres some 150 kilometres away.

Two of his female friends, who have not been named in reports but are 19 and 23 years old, have now been arrested by the Judicial Police (PJ) on suspicion of having strangled the victim and dismembered the corpse.

Local media report one of the friends, who the victim was reportedly infatuated with, had tried to convince him to give her some of the 70,000 EUR (61,416 GBP) he had received as compensation when his mother died after she was run over in 2016.

However, when she could not convince him to give her money, she allegedly planned the murder with her friend, asking him to go to one of their houses on 18th March where he was kidnapped and kept hostage for two or three days.

Local media report the victim was tortured to reveal his bank card PIN codes which were then used to make several withdrawals from different banks across the Algarve.

However, during the torture, the victim was allegedly strangled to death and the two women are said to have begun to panic.

The pair decided to get rid of the corpse, quartering the body with a knife and a cleaver, according to reports, before scattering the body and head in different areas.

The body, which had been thrown from a cliff next to the Fortress of Beliche in Sagres, was found by lifeguards with a black bag covering it from the waist down.

The head was reportedly found by a French couple on holiday on 26th March near the Pego do Inferno waterfall, a popular destination for visitors.

The victim’s Mercedes was reportedly found at the car park of the Sao Vicente Lighthouse in Sagres.

It is unclear if the two suspects have been charged.
