The footage shows her white VW saloon slowly rolling through a small junction before sliding over the edge of the road and plunging into the river below.

The male passenger, who has not been named, was found by rescuers soaked from head to toe but alive and well.

He reached her from the passenger-side door but was unable to pull her free.

Rescuers hoisted the car out of the river using a crane and the woman can be seen in footage hanging lifeless from the vehicle’s seat belt.

Authorities declared her dead and said that one of her arms was broken.

The male passenger is reportedly in police custody as investigations continue.
