The young woman whose husband was killed in a motorbike crash while following her to hospital to give birth to their baby last week has now been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Nusret Ozdemir, 24, was involved in a road accident in the district of Gazipasa in Antalya Province, on the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey, at around 12.30pm on Saturday, 8th January.

He was reportedly riding his motorcycle behind the ambulance transporting his wife, Selma Ozdemir, to hospital to give birth when he collided with a car at an intersection.

He was taken to Gazipasa State Hospital by police officers who were on duty at the intersection at the time, and he was then transferred to another health facility in Alanya following an emergency operation.

However, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away in hospital at around noon on Tuesday, 11th January. He was buried in the town of Ilica.

The victim’s widow, who reportedly gave birth in another hospital on the date of the accident, and their baby daughter, who was diagnosed with jaundice, were both discharged from the hospital on the day of the funeral.

At the time of reporting, she was still being treated for her coronavirus infection.

Local media said the couple had decided to name their daughter Asya before Nusret’s untimely passing.
