A kitchen assistant got an unexpected Christmas present when she rushed into the bathroom in the restaurant where she works after getting stomach cramps and was amazed when she gave birth to a baby girl.
Lidiane Cardoso gave birth without realising she was pregnant in the city of Natal in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte on 15th December.
The 37-year-old was at work when she suddenly started suffering from severe stomach cramps in the early afternoon. She went to the bathroom without having any idea of the surprise that awaited her.
Once through the door, her pain worsened, and then a few seconds later she collapsed as the contractions started.
Restaurant owner Paulo Cortez called his ex-wife Lucia Dantas, who owns another restaurant across the street, to check on Cardoso.
Dantas told local media: “When I got to the bathroom, I saw she was moaning a lot and bleeding. I asked what happened and she replied that she felt a lot of pain and that she had ‘something coming out’.”
Dantas had a look and saw the baby’s head, so she grabbed a towel and placed it underneath.
She told local media: “I started to say ‘for the love of God, help me here, a child is being born’. She said it couldn’t be so, that she wasn’t pregnant.”
A short while later, Dantas held a baby girl in her arms. “I knew she was healthy because when she was born she started to cry. I looked at her little arms, her legs, I saw she was breathing. I covered her up, put her on top of her mother, and she stopped crying.”
The emergency services were then called to the restaurant, and both mother and daughter were taken to a nearby maternity unit to applause from customers as they left the restaurant.
The newborn weighed in at 3.02 kilogrammes (6.66 lbs), and medics believe she was born at 37 weeks.
Cardoso is already breastfeeding the newborn and both mother and daughter are in good health, according to the unit.
Dantas also has a son, Antonio, who was at the restaurant with his mother and was celebrating his 21st birthday at the time.
He told local media: “It was the best present ever. Gaining a new life on my birthday, so close to Christmas, in a year as difficult as this one has been. It was something surreal.”
