This is the moment a woman clings on to her handbag for dear life despite apparently being shot in the leg by a thief before her attacker eventually gives up and flees.

The incident took place in the Lindavista neighbourhood in the Mexican capital Mexico City and was recorded by a CCTV camera in broad daylight.

In the video, two women, who have not been named in reports, can be seen walking down the street when a man walking behind them suddenly runs towards the woman in front, wearing a red top.

The thug tries to steal the woman’s bag but she pulls it away from him, so he turns to the woman behind and tries to grab her handbag.

When the second woman resists the thug and local media report he then opened fire, with the woman dropping to the ground in pain in the video.

The criminal then tries to grab her bag off her as she lies on the ground but the brave woman keeps clinging onto her belongings as he threatens her with a gun.

The thug’s accomplice then pulls up on a motorbike and the criminal has one last tug-of-war with the woman which he loses before fleeing on the bike.

Local media report the woman was shot in the leg but there are no updates on her condition.

The thugs managed to escape and they have not been identified, local media report.

The General Prosecution of Justice said that an investigation has been started.
