A woman has gone on trial in Switzerland for refusing to learn the local language – German – for years, which led authorities to refuse to extend her residence permit, and now the case is in the Federal Supreme Court.

The woman, who has not been named but who is from Kosovo and who has lived in the Swiss Canton of Aargau for years, has refused to learn German for years, according to Swiss newspaper Blick.

This led the authorities to refuse to extend her residence permit, which led to the case ending up with the Federal Supreme Court.

This resulted in her being issued a warning in a ruling that was issued last Thursday in the city of Lausanne.

She is also expected to learn the language or face having her residence permit revoked at a later date, with the Federal Supreme Court emphasising that it was important to learn the local language so as to be able to integrate into society.

The woman, who has lived in Switzerland since 2015 with her husband and her four-year-old son, runs the risk of being sent back to Kosovo. This decision would not affect her husband or her son, the latter being entitled to settle in the country under Swiss law.

The woman has reportedly refused to learn the local language for years, with the federal court saying that she “persistently” refused to “make any effort to learn the German language” and slamming her for her “uncooperative attitude”. This is apparently despite repeated requests from the Aargau Migration Office for her to adapt to the local situation.

It is currently unclear how long the woman has to learn German before she is kicked out of Switzerland.
