A 39-year-old woman has been arrested for stealing 62 cars – mostly from car hire companies – and flogging them for a total of just 137,220 GBP.

According to local media, Djeni Herilewie was arrested in the south-western Indonesian capital Jakarta and she is suspected of stealing 62 cars in two months.

Reports said the 39-year-old woman rented most of the cars she stole and avoided detection from car rental companies by regularly changing her mobile phone number.

Afterwards, she is believed to have sold them on for an estimated value of 2.5 billion IDR (137,220 GBP).

The local authorities managed to stop the suspect after two months by reportedly using one of the alleged victims as bait.

So far, the police have only managed to recover 13 of the alleged 62 stolen cars.

Meanwhile, the police are trying to find out what the woman has done with the money she made from the alleged sale of the stolen vehicles as nothing has appeared in her bank account.

Herilewie has reportedly told the police that she spent all the money enjoying a luxury lifestyle.

She has been charged with car theft and could face up to four years in prison, according to local media.
