She is said to have told cops her sister had fallen and as she could not lift her sibling she dressed her in a nappy and put a pillow under her head.
The 53-year-old woman, whose name has not been revealed, lived with her sister, 50, in the city of Alicante in the Valencia region in eastern Spain.
Local media report the authorities were alerted to the incident after the sisters’ neighbours noticed a strong smell coming from their flat.
The neighbours also said they had not heard the sister’s usual arguments in recent days.
Cops and firefighters then went to the home and knocked on the door but as nobody answered they used a chair to be able to see through the windows with a torch.
Local media report the elder sister eventually opened the door and when the cops went into the flat they found the body of the younger sister lying dead on the kitchen floor.
The body is said to have been in a clear state of decomposition and an autopsy showed she had died of natural causes, with her body showing no signs of violence.
The elder sister reportedly failed to give a coherent statement to the police initially so she was taken to the Sant Joan hospital to undergo a psychiatric test.
The autopsy showed the woman had died 20 days earlier and the woman had not called emergency services in that time.
The psychiatric test determined the sister was suffering from “hysterical amnesia” and she was released.
A neighbour told reporters that the sisters had not used lights in their flat but candles instead, and claimed charities had tried to help the sisters butt hey had not let social workers into their home.
According to reports, a relative travelled from the Spanish capital Madrid to take care of the elder sister.
The mummified body of a man was found in his home around 100 metres from the sisters’ flat in 1991.
He had died 17 years earlier at Christmas time in 1974 when he was 67 years old and nobody had been into his flat since.
The body was found when police broke into the house in order to investigate a burglary and he was found to have died from a heart attack.
