A woman in Brazil has been arrested accused of killing her own teenage son by plunging a knife into his chest following an argument between the pair, subsequently claiming the stabbing was “accidental”.

Iole Ribeiro Bastos, 35, is suspected of murdering her own 19-year-old son at their home in the Jabaquara neighbourhood of the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo on 18th December.

According to family members, Raphael William Ribeiro da Silva had a strained relationship with his mother and the pair often argued.

During their last fight, Bastos reportedly stabbed Silva in the chest with a knife, and the young man had to be rushed to the local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Bastos was subsequently arrested by the police, to whom she reportedly claimed she had no intention of killing her son and that the stabbing was “accidental”.

The shocking case came the same week as a mother allegedly beat her two-year-old son to death in the municipality of Guarulhos in Sao Paulo state.

The bruised baby was taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival, prompting the police to arrest his mother.

Both women are currently in preventive detention as the respective investigations continue.
