This student was found dead in her car with gunshot wounds on International Women’s Day just two days after asking her family to remember her “in the best image” if she died as a result of gender violence.

Nadia Veronica Rodriguez Saro Martinez, 23, was killed in the early morning of 8th March in the city of Salamanca, in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato.

Her body was found with gunshot wounds inside her car in the community of La Ordena. Local media report she had dropped a friend off as they drove home from a party before the crime occurred.

Her father, Bernardo Rodriguez, confirmed the murder on social media, writing: “With a lot of pain I inform you that my daughter was the victim of a murder, I am destroyed, I cannot believe it yet.”

Her aunt, Araceli Rodriguez, wrote: “A day like today they destroy another family again, a day like today (International Women’s Day), they turned off another light, a day like today it should be heard in every single corner of the world, no more violence”.

The victim was studying International Relations at the Iberoamerican University of the city of Leon, in Guanajuato state. Just two days before her death she had posted online, simulating being a victim of gender violence. She wrote: “Mum, dad, brother. If someday it is me, remember me in the best image.

“Remember me like I will remember you, because I am not just a hurt body thrown on the ground, because my being does not live in the pictures shared by the media.”

The university wrote in a message: “It is ironic that the same day women joined in our country to shout no more violence against women, we receive this terrible news with pain and outrage.”

No motive has been provided for the murder and an investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.
