This 51-year-old woman has been killed by a hit-and-run driver after she left her home during coronavirus lockdown to go to the supermarket.

Victim Veronica Gonzalez died in the city of Lujan in the province of Buenos Aires in north-eastern Argentina after being hit by a car allegedly being driven by Julio Cesar Giovanetone, who is 35 years old.

Reports said that the driver allegedly did not stop to help the woman who had left her home to go to the supermarket and instead drove away.

The victim’s daughter Malena Gonzalez told local media: “When she was crossing the street to go to her car the man ran her over from behind. There was nothing that could be done as she died right there.”

An off-duty saw the accident and reportedly chased the driver to his house where he found him driving his car into the garage.

Malena Gonzalez said: “My mum went to do the groceries. The man ran her over with his car and an off-duty policeman followed him to his house. He never stopped to help her.”

Suspect Giovanetone was reportedly arrested.

An initial investigation found that the man had had an argument with his partner and he was about to move out of his house. Local authorities are still investigating the case.

Malena Gozalez said: “My mum is dead. We want justice.”
