This is the moment a Russian woman hits a Buddhist monument with a sledgehammer and spits on it claiming it is “Satanic”.

The bizarre incident took place at a Buddhist stupa in the village of Sukhaya Balka in Emelyanovsky District located in the Krasnoyarsk Krai region in southern Russia.

In the video, the woman, who has not been named in reports, can be seen standing at the top of the monument and she repeatedly hits it with a sledgehammer.

The woman is then seen hitting the fence surrounding the monument with the sledgehammer before spitting on a part of the fencing on the ground and walking away.

At one point the woman asked the cameraman if he was going to complain to Satan and he says “that was a cool clip, I’ll share it online”.

Local media report the woman vandalised the monument because she “does not like Satan” as she was Orthodox.

The Regional Department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that the aggressor was detained and was placed in a pre-trial detention centre.

The press service of the local police department reported: “Born in 1967, this woman is now under the investigation. She faces up to three years of imprisonment for an act of vandalism if found guilty and a criminal case is opened.”

According to the Buddhist centre in Krasnoyarsk, breaking a stupa is one of the five most terrible deeds for which the person committing them loses the chance for a holy rebirth.

Stupa is an important form of Buddhist architecture. It is generally considered to be a sepulchral monument — a place of burial or a receptacle for religious objects.
