This is the moment a pregnant passenger gives birth to a baby boy in the back seat of a taxi during the coronavirus outbreak.

The unnamed mum had climbed into the cab with her mother shortly after experiencing abdominal pain and going into labour at roughly 7:30am local time on 12th March.

Taxi driver Zhao Xiaohong drove the mother and daughter towards Xi’an Fourth Hospital in China’s north-western province of Shaanxi, running red lights in the process.

Surveillance footage from his vehicle shows the pregnant passenger groaning in pain as her mother tries to comfort her in the back of the taxi, which appears to have been kitted out with a plastic sheet to protect the driver from infection during the coronavirus outbreak.

Cabbie Mr Zhao calls the hospital with his mobile phone and asks them to prepare for his arrival, saying the mother’s water had broken, and that the child’s head was already visible.

Before they arrived at Xi’an Fourth Hospital, the healthy baby boy was born in the back seat.

His cries can be heard in the video as nurses collector the newborn from the taxi.

Mr Zhao accompanied the new mum into the hospital and only left after doctors look the woman into a delivery room.

Both mum and child are healthy and in stable condition, reports said.
