Woman, 108, Applauded As She Leaves Hospital After Beating COVID

This is the moment a 108-year-old Peruvian woman leaves hospital amid applause from medics after overcoming her battle against COVID-19.

Petronila Cardenas, 108, was discharged from a Temporary Attention and Isolation Centre (CAAT) by the National Hospital Hipolito Unanue in the Peruvian capital Lima on 16th December.

Cardenas travelled to the capital city from the department of Huancavelica where she is from and speaks the indigenous language Quechua.

The video shows the moment the 108-year-old woman is wheeled out of the hospital by medical staff and is applauded by doctors.

The video cuts to show the patient speaking in her native language with one of her carers while she eats. The footage ends as the woman is finally reunited with her family and applauded once more as she is helped into a car.

Cardenas’ daughter Melissa Condori, 45, told local media that her mum had became very ill and had difficulty breathing, but was rejected by two hospitals who claimed to not have enough beds to treat the woman before she was referred to the CAAT in Lima.

Cardenas will now spend the festive period with her five kids, 15 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

She is the 442nd patient to be discharged from the CAAT facility which opened its doors on 22nd June, according to reports.

According to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University, Peru has reported 989,457 cases of COVID-19 resulting in 36,858 related deaths.

Peru has reported 1,130.53 deaths per million citizens which is behind Belgium’s 1,582.89 deaths per million.

The United Kingdom is ninth with 969.71 deaths per million. Meanwhile, Sweden, which did not mandate national lockdowns or face masks, is 23rd with 745.42 deaths per million.
