Brutal Erhan Onur Eldemir – who had been lying in wait for his ex – stabbed her repeatedly after she got off the bus from work after screaming abuse at her.

Victim Aysegul Simsek, 33, later died of multiple stab wounds in Kepez State Hospital in Antalya Province, Turkey, on 12th February.

Eldemir, 40, told police he had just wanted to talk to her, despite ambushing her with a knife.

The couple – who have a six-year-old son – had been divorced for three years and Aysegul had an active restraining order against her former husband.

Eldemir was arrested when he later turned himself in at a police station.

He claimed in his statement: “I had a restraining order against me, I went to her house to talk. She got off the bus there. I wanted to talk, we had an argument.

“She sprayed me with pepper spray. I got angry, I stabbed her. Then I went to the police station and surrendered.”

Aysegul was later buried in Madenli – a village in the district of Gelendost in Isparta Province.

Femicide is a growing problem in Turkey, particularly after the country officially quit the Istanbul Convention in July 2021.

According to data from the ‘Monument Counter’, which is “a digital memorial for women killed by violence” and is updated daily, 393 women were killed by men in 2022, while 36 femicides have taken place in Turkey so far this year.
