A woman who suffered horrific injuries after her husband poured boiling water over her has gone back to him a year after the incident.

The victim is 26-year-old mother Anastasia Shapovalova, from the city of Zaporizhia city, in the south-eastern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhia Oblast.

The case of Shapovalova hit the headlines when she was rushed to the hospital with terrible burns all over her body in August 2019.

Disturbing images show open wounds on her legs and her burnt face covered in bandages.

According to the founder of the ‘Emotion’ charity foundation, Zlata Nekrasova, who dealt with Shapovalova’s case, they were dismayed to discover that the young woman has decided to get back together with Dmitry Mezhebitsky, believed to be 34, barely a year after the incident.

Nekrasova said: “Such behaviour is called “victim syndrome”, and helping such women is the most difficult.”

Shapovalova, the mother of Vladimir, 6 and Anna, 4, gave an interview to the ‘Emotion’ founder Nekrasova several weeks after the incident.

She said: “He acted in cold blood like it all was planned. The same day when it happened, I was planning to move with the kids to another apartment. He was torturing me and watching my every step all the time that we’ve been married, all these eight years.”

The woman described how she was woken up by her husband pouring boiling water onto her face. She explained that she tried to escape, but he caught up with her and poured another gallon of boiled water onto her body before cutting her hair with scissors.

At the time, the young mother’s friend, Natalya, told local news channel Fakty UA: “Sometimes she lived with me with her children. Then he was coming and asking for forgiveness, gave gifts to her and she was returning back to him. And after a while, she again came to me covered in blood … He beat her in my presence too.”

According to Fakty UA, Mezhebitsky was arrested on the 12th of August last year and held for two months, although there is no further information as to what his current judicial status is and whether he is on bail.
