A 53-year-old woman has been arrested after she allegedly lived with her husband’s corpse rotting in the flat they shared for four months after his death until a passerby noticed the smell.

The incident took place in the ward of Edogawa in the central Japanese capital Tokyo when a building management worker alerted the local authorities to the foul smell coming from the woman’s flat.

According to local media, her 72-year-old husband died of believed natural causes back in February.

His wife, identified as Yasuko Naito, told the police that she did not know who to call so she wrapped her husband’s body in blankets and left it on the sofa, according to reports.

A building management worker noticed the strong stench coming from the flat last week and immediately contacted the cops.

A police spokesperson said that the body had no apparent signs of injury and post-mortem will take place to establish the exact cause of death.

According to local media, the 53-year-old woman told cops that her husband, who slept in a different bedroom, did not wake up one morning in February and she went to check on him

When she realised he was not breathing, she reportedly placed the corpse on a futon and failed to alert the authorities.

There have been no further updates on the autopsy results.
